DeGraff Ohio: In a night filled with racing action,
West Liberty Ohio driver Chris Parker emerged the shining star.
Parker survived a wild 50 lap late model main to post his first win
of 2010 and pick up $1000.00. Jerry Nagel set the pace the first 31
circuits and looked to maybe have his first win in hand.
The race was red flagged on lap ten when a multiple
car crash blocked the track in turn one. Rodney Roush suffered the
brunt of the damage for the second week in row in the same spot.
Roush was uninjured, but his Monte Carlo took a beating. Nagel as
stated, took the lead again when action resumed, with Jim Lewis Jr.,
Brad Coons, Chris Parker and Buck Purtee rounding out the top five.
The paint trading stepped up a nottch as the laps wound down. Parker
finally got by on lap 32 and set sail for the checker in his KDC
Racing- Dollar General ride. Parker cruised under the checker, with
Nagel, Purtee, Greg Sparks and Russ Bobb in tow. Parker dedicated
his win to Harley Gross, father of crewmember Jerry Gross who was in
grave condition at race time. The family reported that Mr. Gross
passed away at 8:00 AM Sunday morning. Heat wins went to Coons and
Brad Yelton.
The sport stocks had a strange happening during the
running of the 20 lap feature. Mike Scherer, son of former track
owner John Scherer decided to be part of the show, as he drove his
street car onto the track during a yellow flag. "I can't believe he
would embarrass his family name by pulling such a stunt. He not only
endangered himself but the other drivers. His rapid drive thru the
pit area could have led to a tragedy. His grandfather Raymond
Scherer would turn over in his grave if he knew what happened"
stated current track owner Charlie Stapleton, The Champaign County
Sherriffs department dispatched several crews to the track and
Scherer was removed by them. Mike Pippin of Bellefontaine in his
brothers H&R Block backed chevy led all 20 laps to claim his first
win of season. Terry Purtee, Chris Abbott, Chad Fiessinger and Larry
Adams finished second thru fifth. The make up feature from earlier
in the month was won by Plain City driver Richard Roush in his Plain
City Village Market sponsored Camaro.
The 25 lap modified main saw a familiar face in
victory lane for the first time this season. Second generation
driver Chad Poole of Springfield led all 25 counters in his Finley
Recycling sponsored ride. Steve Snapp was second, with Rob Yelton
third, Joe Pequignot fourth and Brad Yelton fifth. Jim Lewis Jr. won
the dash, with Brian Brandyberry carrying the checker for the heat.
The Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association 20 lap main was
won by West Liberty's Daniel Wirrick in the Wirrick Farms racer. Bob
Bayse, Jerry Russell, Donnie Eaton and Connie Smith followed.
Russell won the heat race.
In Pro 4 action, it was Houston's Steve Clarkson
sporting the big smile, after he won the 20ap main. Clarkson's
Reasonable Choices backed racer was pursued across the finish line
by David Gerstner, Josh Sage, Dave Sage and Rodney Schrack. Josh
Sage was the heat race winner.
In compact racing, Mason Patrick got by Matt Stone
with just a few laps to go to win still another win in the Spains
Service Center Probe. Stone held on for second, with Todd Turvine
third, Steven Salyers fourth and JIm Massengill fifth. Heat wins
went to Salyers and Massengill.
The Saturday night will mark the return of the super
lates, as the Main Event Racing Series makes its annual stop. A 75
lap feature will highlight the night of speed. The Pro-4's, Compacts
and Sport Stocks will also do battle. The first green flag will fall
at 7 for Apex Aluminum Die Casting night at the races.
