DeGraff OH: 7/10/10: It was great night for local hotshoe Rob Yelton
when racing returned to Shady Bowl Speedway for Trailer Wiz Night
after a one week break Saturday. Yelton, who competes in the late
model and modified classes carried the checker three times, as he
won every feature he competed in. The night that most drivers just
dream of started with the make up late model feature from a rained
out event from June 12th. Starting eighth in the 25 lapper, Yelton
rode the high side to the lead in his Yelton Trucking racer and
dominated the event. Rodney Roush, Mark Parker, Craig Boralnd and
Vaughn Young finished second thru fifth.
The
next win for Yelton came in the modified class. The race got off to
a rocky start after a crash just before the green saw Herb Newman
head on into the frontchute wall. Newman was uninjured, but the car
suffered heavy damage. Mike Pippin led the first 15 laps before
Yelton once again used the high line to take over the lead. Yelton
in his Tapp Auto Sales open wheeler sped under the checker nine laps
later. Pippin held on for second, with Gary Eaton third, Brad Yelton
fourth and Jim Lewis Jr. fifth. The dash was won by Rob Yelton with
the heat going to Pippin.
The
third and final win for Yelton came in the regular late model
feature. This win was a lot tougher for Yelton. He once again was
relegated to an eighth place starting spot. Jerry Nagel took the lead
at the drop of the green to lead the first three laps, before giving
way to Brad Koons. Koons set a torrid pace as Yelton once again was
raising dust and bouncing off walls to make his way to the front.
Yelton caught Koons on lap thirteen and tried an outside pass on lap
fourteen. Koons appeared to lose traction in turn four and spin,
giving the lead to Yelton. The Jeff's Welding backed racer then led
the final 10 counters to win #3. Mark Parker, Nagel, Roush and Koons rounded out the top five. Rick Thompson won the dash, with
Aaron Pippin winning the heat. A late crash in the feature brought
out a red flag as Vaughn Young and Greg Sparks crashed heavily on
the backchute. Once again all drivers were ok, but both cars
suffered heavy damage.
The
compact division offered some really close racing, as point leaders
Steven Salyer and Mason Patrick had a great battle in the feature as
they dueled side by side before Patrick took over the top spot late
in the race to take the win. The win topped of a night to remember
for Patrick in his Kirby Auto Parts Probe, who set a new track
record during time trials with a 16.36 lap. Salyers, David Yoder,
Todd Turvine, and Jordon Sage rounded out the top five. Salyer
carried the checker for the dash, with Jim Massengill taking the
heat win.
The
Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association car were also on hand. The 20 lap
main saw a familiar face in victory lane, as Covington's Brandon
Bayse in his RCH Road Oil coach carried the checker once again.
K. D Knodler, Bob Bayse, Daniel Wirrick and Jerry Russell finished
second thru fifth. Brandon Bayse also won the dash.
Jeff
Ellis was the winner of the Detroit Iron feature in his DeGraff
Creamery Chevy truck.
This
Saturday (7/17) the Bowl will host a full program of Late Models,
Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Compacts, Pro-4's, and the dwarf cars. The
night will feature double points in all classes. It will also be KTH
Night at the races. The first green flag will drop at 7.
