DeGraff OH: (5/29): It was Fan Appreciation Night
at Shady Bowl Speedway with the best crowd of the season taking
advantage of reduced ticket prices. Fans were treated to a full
night of close stock car action with six divisions doing battle.
The late model feature was the first main event for
the night. Jerry Nagel took the lead at the drop of the green flag
only to be blackflagged for running under his qualifying time.
Rodney Roush then took over the top spot in his family owned Monte
Carlo. Roush looked to be headed for his first win of the season
before fast qualifier Rob Yelton sped by on lap 17. The Quincy
speedster then set sail for his fourth win in five tries in his
Bellefontaine Truck Sales Chevy. Roush held on for second, with
Jim Lewis Jr. third, Brandon Bayse fourth and Mark Parker fifth.
Lewis was the winner of the heat race.
The sport stocks were next on the racing card for a 20 lap event.
Aaaron Pippin lead the field to the green and led the early laps
before a turn one melee with Buck Purtee that put both to the rear
of the field. Second generation driver Chuck Kemp then took
over the top spot. Kemp soon yielded to the lead to Chris Abbott
of Marion. Rodney Roush passed Kemp in the late stages, but had to
settle for a view of Abbott's Red Barn BBQ sponsored Chevelle take
the checker. Kemp claimed third spot, with Pippin fourth and
Richard Roush fifth. Fast qualifier Jesse Gade won the heat race.
The Ohio Valley Dwarf cars were next on the
speedway for a 20 lapper. It turned out be a two car race with
Brandon Bayse and Daniel Wirrick battling for the lead. Wirrick
came up just short as Bayse put his NAPA coach bodied car in
victory lane. Bob Bayse, Jerry Russell and Don Eaton rounded out
the top five. Brandon Bayse was the winner in heat action.
The modifieds were next up with thirteen cars taking the green.
Mike Pippin of Degaff took advantage of his front row starting
spot to jump out front in his H & R Block sponsored openwheeler.
Pippin locked up the low groove forcing any attempt to pass him to
take place on the outside. No one was able to get by him on the
high side, as he claimed his first modified feature. Jim Lewis
Jr., Brian Brandyberry, Steve Snapp and Brad Yelton rounded out
the top five. Brandyberry and Gregg Jackson took heat honors.
The 20 lap compact feature was a hard fought event with fourteen
cars taking the green. Matt Stone was the early leader before a
three wide pass put him back to third, with Todd Turvene taking
over the lead with Mason Patrick in second. Turvene led the next
several laps before Patrick took over the top spot.
When the checker flew, it was Patrick out front in
his Pops Pizza Parlor Ford Probe. Steven Salyer was able to close
the gap on Patrick, but had to settle for second. Turvene, Stone
and Justin Pope finished third thru fifth. Salyers and Stone were
winners of heat races.
Chris Hensley of Springfield put his Rainbow Muffler El Camino in
victory lane in the Detroit Iron main, with Zack Thornhill second.
This Saturday (6/5) will feature the Iron Man 40
for the sport stocks with $500.00 awaiting the winner. The Late
Models, Modifieds, Compacts and Dwarfs will also share the racing
card. It will also be 2010 Grad Night. All 2010 graduates will be
admitted to the grandstand area for $5.00 with a copy of the
diploma. Gates will open at 3, with racing at 7.
