DeGraff OH (5/22): It was long night for Shady Bowl
fans Saturday as a prerace shower held off the start of qualifying
for well over an hour. The racing was worth the wait however as
fans saw nine heat races and six features before the final checker
fell.
The Pro-4's took to the track first for their
feature that saw the race turn into a two car battle between Piqua
brothers Josh and Dave Sage. The race had family members split
down the middle as to they wanted to see win the 20 lap main. The
siblings put on a great show, with Dave trying all the tricks to
pass younger brother Josh. When the checker flew how ever it was
Josh in his Wyant an Silver Accounting sponsored truck out front,
with Dave right on his tailgate. David Gerstner, Rodney Schrack
and David Four rounded out the top five. Gerstner carried the
checker for the heat race.
In Sport Stock racing, Dayton's Shawn Stansell muscled his way
past early leader Chad Fiessinger to take over the lead near the
halfway point. Stansell, behind the wheel of his Josh and Dads
Body Shop sponsored Camaro then set sail for the checker notching
his first win of the season. Fiessinger was just edged out by
Chris Abbott and had to settle for third. The Roush brothers,
Rodney and Richard finished fourth and fifth. Buck Purtee was the
winner of the heat race.
The 50 lap Racing Legends of the Past late model
main took the green flag next. Dayton's Greg Sparks busted out
front at the drop of the green and was turning in a strong
performance. The night turned out to be a disappointment for
Sparks however as he blew an engine while leading on lap 11. On
the restart Fairborn's Jim Lewis Jr took over the helm. Lewis set
a torrid pace in a race slowed several times by spins and crashes
Don Mahaffey suffered heavy damage on his racer after something
broke putting him hard into the backchute wall in the worst
incident. Lewis looked to have the race in hand, although pressure
from Rob Yelton and Bud Perry was constant. On lap 45 Lewis' night
came to an end, as a valve cover gasket failed putting him into
the pits. Yelton then took over the lead on the restart. Yelton,
of Bellefontaine held off the late race charge of Perry to take
his third win in four starts in his Bangs Salon Chevy. Perry held
on for second, with Rodney Roush, Russ Bobb and Craig Borland
rounding out the top five. Sparks and Lewis notched heat wins.
The Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association cars tackles the oval next.
Brandon Bayse jumped out front early and looked to have still
another feature win in hand, before mechanical woes sent him to
the pits. West Liberty's Daniel Wirrick then took over the point
and led the rest of the way. Wirrick's Wirrick Farms backed racer
was chased across the finish line by K. D. Knoedler, Jerry
Russell, Donnie Eaton and Connie Smith. Bayse was the heat race
winner.
The Modified main followed the DWARF feature with 15 cars taking
the green. Jim Lewis Jr. jumped out front at the drop of the green
leading the high speed freight train around the tiny oval The
Fairborn resident opened up a nice lead over second place Mike
Pippin. Lewis, with thoughts of his lost late model feature win
earlier in the evening surely wondered what bad luck could
be next. He was soon to find out. He claimed top spot over Pippin
in the 25 lapper in his A&A Bar and Grill openwheeler, posed for
victory lane photos and started to do a victory burnout. Then
trouble again, as something broke in the driveline leaving the
winner stranded on the frontchute. John Lawhorn, Bud Perry and
Mike Carroll rounded out the top five. Pippin and Lewis were heat
race winners.
The 20 lap Compact feature saw a new winner for the first time all
season, as New Carlisle's Steven Salyer stopped Mason Patricks win
streak at 4. Salyer, in his family owned and L&M Automotive Chevy
was chased across the finish line by Patrick, Todd Turvene, Justin
Pope and Holli Eaton. Salyer and Alex Penny were winners in heat
action.
This Saturday night (5/29) will be "Fan Appreciation Night".
General admission wil be reduced to $8.00 for adults. The Late
Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks, Dwarf cars, Compacts and Detroit
Iron cars will be competing. Racing will start at 7.
