DeGraff OH (4/10): The Armageddon Night Of Fire at Shady Bowl
Speedway Saturday was huge hit for area race fans. The Shady Bowl
stockers put on a great show , with the Armageddon jet funny car
putting on a thrilling car meltdown after the races.
The racing action kicked off with the Sport Stock feature. Ten cars
took the green, with Bellefontaine’s Aaron Pippin powering his way
out front at the start. Jesse Gade, who was last weeks winner set
fast time (14.82) and put pressure on Pippin right away. Pippin had
his H&R Block backed Chevy running to perfection as he Gade and Chad
Fiessinger made it a three car battle. Pippin proved to be too
strong however as he took the top spot. The race ended just in time,
as Pippins right front tire went flat in victory lane . Gade was
second, with Fiessinger third, Chuck Kemp fourth and Richard Roush
fifth.
The powerful open wheel modifieds lined up next for their 25 lap
main. Sidney resident Brian Brandyberry used his front row starting
spot to take the lead into turn one. Brandyberry had his hands full,
as fast qualifier (13.83) Mike Carroll and Jim Lewis Jr. set up a
three car race to the finish. Brandyberry was flawless in his
driving and left no openings for Carroll or Lewis as the trio
circled the tiny oval. Brandyberry’s Premier Contractors racer took
the checker over Carroll and Lewis. Brad Yelton and Brad Williams
rounded out the top five. Heat races went to Rob Yelton and Bud
Perry.
The late model 25 lapper followed the nights trend, with pole sitter
Jim Lewis Jr. jumping out front at the start. Lewis in his West Side
Auto Wash Monte Carlo was clearly the fastest car on this night, the
Fairborn driver led all 25 counters to take the win. Brandon Bayse,
Bud Perry, Rodney Roush and Gregg Sparks rounded out the top five.
The 20 lap Pro-4 feature was one of the best races of the night,
with Steve Clarkson, fast qualifier Dave Sage and Dave Gerstner had
a great three car battle. Clarkson from Houston, took the low
groove, with Sage taking the high line. The duo ran most of the
event that way with Gerstner lurking in third Gerstners luck soon
ran out, as he had a flat tire and went to the pit area Racing
resumed with Clarkson and Sage still running side by side. Clarkson
in his Rosewood Machine and Tool Ford led the money lap to take the
win. Sage, Rodney Schrack, David Foor, Gerstner and Josh Sage
rounded out the field.
The 20 lap Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association feature was just as
tight as the Pro-4 event. Bob Bayse took the early lead with Brandon
Bayse and Daniel Wirrick in hot pursuit. The trio went at it the
whole race side by side and sometimes three wide. Wirrick in his
Wirrick Farms ride made a daring late race pass to take the lead and
hold off Brandon Bayse and Bob Bayse in a close finish. Eric Giles
and Donnie Eaton took fourth and fifth. Brandon Bayse carried the
heat checker.
The 20 lap compact main turned out to be another Mason Partick speed
fest. Patrick took the lead early in the event in his Kirby Auto
Parts Ford with Steven Salyer running second. The race ended just
that way, with Jim Massengill third, Justin Pope fourth and Todd
Trevine fifth. Salyer was the heat winner.
This Saturday (4/17) will feature a regular program of Late Models,
Modifieds, Pro-4’s, Sport Stocks, Compacts, Dwarfs and Detroit Iron.
Gates will open at 3, with time trails at 5:30 and racing at 7.
