STAPLETON TAKES SHADY BOWL SHOOTOUT

DeGraff OH: (5/10) Shady Bowl Speedway hosted its second American Modified Series event of the ‘08 season with a full field of cars on hand.

Springfield’s Chad Poole set fast time with a 13.67 lap around the three tenths mile oval. Poole then rolled a three on the dice to set the inversion for the two qualifying heats that determine the starting line ups.  The ten lap events were won by Seville Oh driver Tim Ice and Scott Coe from Fort Wayne IN. The 24 car field took the green with Coe and Ice making up the front row for the 50 lapper. Coe jumped out to an early lead and set a torrid pace as Poole and Greg Stapleton battled for position behind him. Coe had things pretty much his way as the laps counted down. Stapleton took over second spot when Poole encountered brake problems. Stapleton, the winner of the first AMS race soon caught Coe with five laps to go. The duo caught lapped traffic with two laps to go that set the stage for a great finish. Coe got caught down low behind a lapped car, with Stapleton putting the throttle thru the firewall to make a daring pass on the high side. Stapleton of Troy led the final lap to once again put his B&B Gear and Machine sponsored Stacy chassis to pick up the $2500.00 top prize.   Coe had to settle for second spot, with two time AMS champ Bud Perry third, defending  AMS champ Mike Carroll was fourth with Poole fifth.

The Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association 20 lap feature was once again dominated by Covington’s Brandon Bayse. Bayse. The 2007 champion looks like a lock to repeat in his Stoops Freightliner coach.  Bill Hostetler, Bob Bayse, Cory Barcus and Max Evans rounded out the top five. Jerry Damewood and Brandon Bayse captured heat wins.

The 20 lap sport stock saw a familiar face in victory lane, as Bud Perry of Edgerton OH made his street stock debut a good, as he set fast time and won the feature.  Perry was behind the wheel of the Chad Fiessinger owned Camaro sponsored by Apex Aluminum.  Greg Sparks made his 08 debut with a second place finish, while Aaron Pippin, Mark Heath and Larry Adams rounded out the top five.

In Pro-4 racing, Houston’s Steve Clarkson won his third straight feature in his 47 Bar and Grill backed Ford. The veteran driver is on a mission to add another track crown to his resume. Randy was second, with Dave Sage third, Kenny Snyder fourth and Josh Sage fifth.

The 20 lap Compact feature saw second generation driver Justin Durflinger carry the checker in his Stan’s Garage Honda. The Bellefontaine senior gave himself a nice graduation gift as he has been a victim of bad racing luck of late. Mark Parker was second, with Lou Ebright, David Yoder and Brian Beach following.

This Saturday ( May 17th)the Modifieds, Late Models, Sport Stocks, Compacts , Dwarfs and the Detroit Iron cars will take to the Champaign county oval . Racing will begin at 7.
