STAPLETON TAKES AMS WIN AT SHADY BOWL
DeGraff OH: (4/26)- Shady Bowl Speedway finally got in its second racing program of the 2008 racing season Saturday after rain and cold played havoc with the schedule. It was great night of speed for the fans, as the American Modified Series headlined the night’s schedule.
Troy Ohio’s Greg Stapleton started off the night in fine fashion as he set fast time for the open wheelers. Stapleton then won the first 10 lap qualifier to earn the pole position for the 50 lap feature. Stapleton and two time AMS champ Bud Perry, who won the second heat race, led the field to the green flag. Stapleton’s #21 beat Perry into turn one to take the lead. The field soon settled down as drivers tried to move up thru the field. Stapleton, who began his racing career in a mini stock at the Bowl was clearly the class of the field as his B&B Gear and Machine was never really challenged as he led all 50 circuits. Perry was second in the green to checker event, with Chad Poole getting by rookie Brad Yelton on the white flag lap for third. Mike Carroll finished if fifth spot.
The late model feature turned out be another episode of the Bud Show, as Bud Perry sped to still another win in his Redskin Motorsports-Continental Express Monte Carlo. Perry dominated the event, with Jason Dillon running second in his first night out in two seasons. Chad Poole came from the rear of the field to finish third, with Mark Parker fourth and Shawn Stansell fifth.
In Sport Stock action Richard Roush of Plain City made it two wins in a row in his John Eger Excavating Camaro. The win was far from easy, as the top five cars traded paint, attitudes and positions most of the way. Roush took the checker, with Jason Purtee, Chris Abbott, Aaron Pippin and Larry Adams doing some serious bump and run action before finishing in that order.
When the checker fell for the 20 lap Pro-4 feature it was a familiar face in victory lane posing for photos, as Houston’s Steve Clarkson put another notch in his victory belt. Clarkson’s 47 Bar and Grill Ford was pursued across the finish line by Randy Human, Dave Sage, Kenny Snyder and Rodney Schrack.
The Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association saw their car count shrink after a serious practice crash sent two drivers to local hospitals for treatment. At press time no additional information was available on injuries. Brandon Bayse of Covington OH put his Stoops sponsored scaled down racer in victory lane after a strong performance that showed he had the best car on this night. Bill Hostetler, Bob Bayse, Cory Barcus and Max Evans rounded out the top five.
The wild antics of the compacts rounded out night racing. DeGraff’s Jerry Ellis Jr. returned to victory lane, breaking a stretch of bad luck that started in 07. Ellis was pursued across the finish line by Josh and Dave Sage, Justin Pope and Lou Ebright.
This Saturday night (5/3) the Shady Bowl compacts will be racing for a top prize of $300.00. The Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Stocks and Detroit Iron will also be in action. Racing will start at 7.
